In June, as part of the RightsCon 2021 program, LAPIN will hold two collaborative sessions to discuss scenarios related to privacy, data protection and new technologies. The events will be held in English and participation is free. Registration is open on the RightsCon website until May 21!
Community labs are spaces for debates in which facilitators will present the problems or topics to be discussed and all participants can present their suggestions, analyzes and contributions.
Check out the themes and more details about the two sessions below:
Reset rewind: building agency toward the future by looking at the present as if it were the past – June, 9, 12:30 (BRT)
Organized by LAPIN in partnership with the Youth Observatory (YouthObs – ISOC), this session invites you to travel back in time to examine what must be done in the present to build possible utopian or dystopian futures! Access the session here.
Your starting point will be getting acquainted with future settings that mix both negative and positive traits. #RightsCon – In each of these settings, arrangements of cross-cutting issues – like the digital world’s role in advancing sustainability, the use of artificial intelligence, data protection, and the fight against disinformation – will shape the futuristic scene.
Participants will work in groups to map the possible steps, events or concrete actions that must take place for the future hypothesis to become real. The session will encourage participants to analyze threats, risks and current opportunities related to the digitalization phenomenon in a playful and innovative way.
LAPIN director Pedro Peres participates as host in this panel. Eileen Cejas (YouthObs), Yawri Carr (Global Shapers San José Hub), Raashi Saxena (We The Internet Project), Marcel Krummenauer (Youth IGF-D), Elisabeth Schauermann (German Informatics Society) and Lily Botsyoe (YouthObs) are the facilitators in this session.
Data protection legislations for law enforcement: multiregional perspectives for regulating data protection in criminal procedures – June, 11, 9:30 (BRT)
This session aims to map the central issues related to the non-regulation of personal data in the implementation of public security policies and in the prosecution of criminal cases. Access the session here.
Facilitators and participants will have the opportunity to expose the current situation in their countries, share positive and harmful practices, and discuss the risks and benefits of regulation.
In the end, all participants will have an overview of different conditions around the world and will be able to propose and think critically about better regulatory projects for their context.
This panel is organized by the LAPIN’s Surveillance Area, which will be facilitated by researcher Carolina Reis. They will also act as facilitators: Murray Hunter (Right 2 Know), Laura Schertel Mendes (Brasilia University), Apar Guptar (Internet Freedom Foundation), Noor Prayoga Mokoginta (AKSET Law) e Silkie Carlo (Big Brother Watch).
