Know more about our institution

[who we are]

The Laboratory of Public Policy and Internet – LAPIN is an independent center of research and action dedicated to challenges related to social, ethical, and judicial areas that digital technologies bring to a connected global society. Since 2016, we have developed scientific research, technical notes, courses, campaigns, and actions regarding privacy, data protection, freedom of speech, and innovation.

Founded in Brasília, the institution has a multidisciplinary team focused on four categories:

(i) digital surveillance;

(ii) artificial intelligence and new technologies;

(iii) disinformation;

(iv) data governance and digital economy.

We are a nonprofit institution, non-partisan, and based in the federal capital. Our work, however, reaches beyond regional and national borders. LAPIN has collaborators in all regions of Brazil and several countries around the world.

[what we do]

Our work consists of (i) investigating, analyzing, and understanding the social, economic, ethical and judicial impacts caused by the internet and other digital technologies; (ii) informing, including, and teaching the public; and (iii) proposing innovative solutions to the challenges and opportunities brought by the digital age to Brazil and other Latin American countries.

We do this through interdisciplinary research, project development, teaching, communication, and independent articulation focused on regulation, governance, and public policies on the internet, innovation, and technology.

LAPIN seeks to serve as a bridge of dialog between decision-makers and civil society. We are a node in the network protecting fundamental rights and civil liberties in the digital world.
